Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to "Lake America" Following US Government Request

Google Maps has begun referring to Lake Ontario as "Lake America," aligning with a directive from the U.S. government. The update was rolled out for U.S. users on Saturday, reflecting changes in the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).

This change follows the breakdown of trade talks between the U.S. and Canada and an executive order signed by U.S. President Donald Trump to rename the body of water. Lake Ontario, which straddles the U.S.-Canada border, is now officially designated as "Lake America" on U.S. government maps.

In a brief update on its Google Maps blog, the company stated it follows GNIS for its map data. This implies Google Maps had to adopt the new name to remain compliant. The platform is the dominant mapping service in the United States by a significant margin.
