Google May Use AI for Ads Based on Email Insights
Google has promised not to show ads based on Gmail messages, but new AI features could potentially enable this.

Google has previously committed to not displaying ads based on the content of users' Gmail messages. However, the company's new AI-driven features might pave the way for this possibility in the future.
While Google currently states that it is not using Gmail data for targeted advertising, the company's support documentation acknowledges that ads may be shown based on insights generated by AI. New Personal Intelligence AI features within Google Search could potentially analyze users' emails to understand aspects like purchase behavior or travel plans.
For example, if a user researches new cars, Personal Intelligence could leverage emails to identify their current vehicle, intended use, and passenger types, synthesizing a more detailed user profile. Google rolled out Personal Intelligence to U.S. users in March, and its activation requires user consent.
Google spokesperson Allie Bodack confirmed via email that Gmail data is not being used for advertising at this time. However, she indicated that the situation could evolve. Experts, such as Forrester analyst Nikhil Lai, note that email data is highly valuable as it reveals high-intent signals. Consumers, however, question the line between personalization and advertising, especially concerning sensitive email data.
