Google, OpenAI Sunset AI Tools, Forcing Workflow Migrations
Google is phasing out its Gemini Gems feature starting November, and OpenAI is retiring Custom GPTs from December. These changes necessitate unplanned migrations for teams relying on these tools to adapt their AI workflows.

Google has announced the discontinuation of its Gemini Gems feature for personal accounts beginning November, with Workspace business and enterprise accounts to follow by March 1, 2027. Following these dates, Gems will no longer be creatable, editable, or usable, and Workspace Studio workflows dependent on them will cease to function.
Nearly three weeks prior, OpenAI communicated a similar challenge regarding its Custom GPTs, personalized versions of ChatGPT. These are scheduled to stop running on December 11, 2026, with select enterprise workspaces receiving an extension until February 11, 2027. OpenAI intends to assist creators in migrating their Custom GPTs into plugins.
These upcoming sunsets force teams utilizing either product into an unplanned migration. This process will highlight which aspects of an organization's AI setup are core strategic assets versus those that exist solely due to vendor support.
Both platforms are converging on a model of saved, written instructions. Google's new 'Skills' represent reusable prompts for recurring tasks. OpenAI's migration plan involves converting Custom GPT instructions into 'Skills' within plugins, with knowledge files becoming reference files.
