Google Opens Smart Home Control to Third-Party AI Agents

Google is broadening access to its smart home ecosystem by enabling third-party artificial intelligence agents to interact with connected devices. The new Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration will permit AI tools, including Claude and Open Claw, to control smart home devices and analyze household data.

This Google Home MCP integration allows AI agents to act on behalf of users in managing and monitoring smart home functions. "This allows any AI agents that support MCP, including Google Antigravity, Claude, Hermes or Open Claw, to securely work with all of the devices and event history in your Google Home ecosystem," stated Taylor Lehman, group product manager at Google Home & Nest, in a blog post.

The integration standardizes how AI can interface with smart devices, offering a more streamlined and secure method for connecting various AI services to home automation systems. This is expected to unlock new possibilities for smart home management and personalization, as users can leverage a wider range of AI solutions.
