Google Play hosts rival app store after Epic Games lawsuit loss

Google Play has begun hosting a rival app store, with Aptoide now available for download. This move follows the antitrust lawsuit lost by Google to Epic Games, which mandated the distribution of third-party app stores within Google Play in the US.

Aptoide, previously available only as a sideloaded client, can now be accessed directly through Google Play. The requirement for Google to allow such distributions was part of the remedies ordered by Judge James Donato after Epic Games' victory in 2023. Other mandated changes include lower developer fees and the allowance of alternative payment systems.

Google had initially attempted to circumvent direct hosting of competing stores by agreeing to a settlement with Epic early this year. This proposed settlement would have allowed for certified third-party app stores but not their direct inclusion in Google Play. However, the settlement was withdrawn when it became apparent the court would not approve it.

Instead of proceeding with the settlement terms for the US market, Google is now complying with the judge's direct orders. The company still intends to launch its Registered App Store program internationally, but the current US implementation is a direct response to judicial mandate.
