Google Play now supports private, AI-generated apps for personal use

Google has launched a new feature within its Google Play app store that allows users to create and utilize their own, AI-generated applications on Android devices without needing to publish them to the entire Play Store audience. This functionality aims to streamline the development of personal apps.

The new capability permits app creation using Google AI Studio, with subsequent deployment directly to the user's device via their standard Google account. These created applications remain entirely private and will not appear in Google Play's search results or listings. This reduces the barrier for users wishing to experiment with building apps for specific personal needs, as prior public publishing was a requirement.

Initially, the feature will be available to users in the U.S. aged 18 and older. The apps are still required to comply with Google Play's existing policies, but they offer users a more direct avenue for experimenting with building native Android applications. Sam Bright, Google's VP & GM for Google Play and Developer Ecosystem, stated that Play is evolving to be more personal and secure.

Later this year, Google plans to expand the feature to allow users to share their creations with a network of trusted friends. This will enable app sharing with small groups, such as family or friends, without them needing to become publicly available on the Play Store. The initiative responds to a growing interest in creating customized applications using AI.
