Google has successfully launched its first advanced processor into Earth's orbit aboard a SpaceX rocket. This marks a significant step in the company's "Sun Catcher" initiative, which aims to establish large-scale computing clusters in space.

The prototype satellite, manufactured by Planet Labs, is designed to validate the functionality of Google's Tensor processors under the demanding conditions of space. The tests will evaluate power supply, thermal management, and the performance of various AI models.

"We've done ground tests, but nothing can fully replicate the actual environment," stated Travis Beal, a Google executive overseeing the project. Initially, the on-orbit processor will run for 15-minute intervals to manage power and heat.

Google envisions a future network of up to 81 satellites forming an in-orbit data center, capable of parallel processing tasks using laser communication links. The feasibility of such a large-scale deployment hinges on significant reductions in launch costs, a goal SpaceX's Starship is intended to address.
