Google has initiated a test in India enabling shoppers to buy products from Walmart-owned Flipkart directly through its Gemini AI and AI Mode. The search giant aims to broaden its AI services beyond product discovery into facilitating e-commerce transactions.
During this limited test, users in India encounter a "Buy" button on select Flipkart product listings within Gemini and Google's AI Mode. This button directs users to a Flipkart checkout flow without leaving the AI interface, streamlining the purchase process.
The early phase of the test is confined to a subset of users and a limited range of products, including smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories. Google plans a wider rollout later in October, ahead of India's key festive shopping season.
This development occurs as Google and competitors, such as OpenAI, integrate commerce functionalities into their AI offerings, seeking to evolve from answering shopping queries and recommending products to playing a more direct role in online purchases.
