Google tests on-orbit AI processing via Project Suncatcher satellite
Google has successfully executed an artificial intelligence model on a satellite orbiting Earth, marking a milestone for its Project Suncatcher initiative.

Google confirmed on Friday that its orbital satellite equipped with Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) has successfully processed data in space. The onboard Gemma 4 model responded to a prompt by generating a haiku, demonstrating the functional capacity of its hardware to handle AI tasks while outside the terrestrial environment.
The test is a component of Project Suncatcher, an experimental initiative focused on the feasibility of deploying AI data center infrastructure in space. By moving compute power to orbit, Google aims to explore the potential for real-time data processing and reduction in latency for satellite-based telemetry and imaging.
While the current results are limited to text generation, the experiment provides technical validation for the hardware configuration in extreme conditions. The company has not yet detailed a timeline for commercial applications, but the successful activation of the Gemma 4 model serves as a proof-of-concept for space-hardened artificial intelligence systems.
