Google to End ChromeOS Updates in 2034

Google has announced that it will stop providing updates for its ChromeOS operating system in mid-2034. The confirmation follows the release of Google's new Googlebook hardware and aligns with previously outlined plans in legal documents.

In a support document aimed at IT administrators in enterprise and education sectors, Google stated that many existing Chromebook devices will be eligible for migration to the new Googlebook operating system. Specific compatible models or details regarding the migration process have not yet been detailed.

Chromebook devices have traditionally offered a ten-year support lifecycle. Google has committed to assisting educational and enterprise clients with the transition to the new operating system, with direct migration paths to be provided for several devices.

Device management features for Googlebook are slated for release in the second half of 2027, suggesting that the initial enterprise-focused Googlebook devices may arrive later. Licensing for the new operating system will differ from Chrome Education and Enterprise licenses.

The Googlebook operating system is expected to feature a design closer to Android than ChromeOS. Google assures continued support for web developers and management capabilities for web applications for IT administrators through APIs.

Pre-orders for Googlebook have begun, with the official launch scheduled for October 4.
