Google to End Gemini Gems Feature, Transition to 'Skills'

Google is phasing out the "Gems" feature within its Gemini AI platform, a tool that enabled users to build customized AI assistants for specific tasks. The change is set to take effect on November 17, 2026.

The company communicated the update through the Gemini app, informing users that their created Gems will be automatically transformed into more generalized "skills." Google assures users that no action is required on their part for the transition, and the existing assistants will remain functional until mid-November.

Launched in 2024, the Gems feature was designed to help users train AI to perform particular tasks without repetitive instructions. Pre-built examples included a learning coach, a brainstorming assistant, and a coding partner. Users could also create their own personal assistants, such as a running coach or vacation planner, and share them with others.

The discontinuation of Gems occurs as standalone AI agents like Meta's Muse and Instinct gain traction. Google's move to consolidate the Gems functionality into a broader "skills" concept may represent an effort to streamline its AI offerings and respond to competitive advancements in the field.
