Google to Introduce Detachable Keyboard Googlebook Devices

Google announced plans to expand its Googlebook hardware line with new detachable 2-in-1 devices, moving beyond traditional clamshell and convertible designs.

2 November 2026

Google disclosed at the Android Dev Summit 2026 that it is expanding the Googlebook product family to include detachable keyboard hardware. This shift marks an evolution in the company's device strategy, which previously relied on traditional laptop designs and limited convertible options.

Market analysis suggests that early attempts at hybrid Googlebooks, such as the Acer Googlebook 14, faced operational limitations due to incomplete system optimization for convertible modes. The introduction of dedicated detachable hardware indicates that Google is refining its operating system architecture to better support tablet-style computing interfaces.

Lenovo is expected to manufacture the first detachable model. Industry reports indicate the device may feature a kickstand design and incorporate the MediaTek Kompanio Ultra 910 processor. The move signals Google's intent to compete more directly in the tablet-hybrid market, a sector currently dominated by established Windows and iPad-based competitors.
