Google to launch experimental orbital data center satellite October 1

Google is set to launch its first experimental satellite for its Project Suncatcher initiative on October 1. Announced last year, Suncatcher aims to develop AI data centers in orbit, offering an alternative to terrestrial data centers which consume significant power.

The satellite, named MVP and roughly the size of a refrigerator, will carry Google's custom TPU AI accelerators. These chips are used for training AI models and performing computational tasks. Typically, data centers house thousands of such chips, requiring substantial electricity.

The MVP satellite will be powered by solar panels generating approximately one kilowatt of electricity. Google did not construct the satellite from scratch, instead utilizing an existing satellite platform from Planet Labs. Originally, Google planned to build two custom satellites by 2027 but opted to expedite its efforts by integrating its chips into a pre-built platform.

The objective of this launch is to test and validate Google's concept for a constellation of AI-enabled satellites operating in space.
