Google to restrict AI tools in schools, making search dependent on their use

Google has announced that it will disable AI tools for K-12 students by default starting next year, requiring school administrators to manually enable them. The policy shift affects a suite of tools, including Gemini, NotebookLM, and AI-enhanced search features.

This update creates a functional dependency between the search engine and AI. According to Google, the integration of AI into its search infrastructure is now so deep that if a school chooses to block AI features, the entire Google Search engine will become inaccessible to students, displaying a message that the service is unavailable.

This presents a challenge for schools that wish to restrict AI for academic integrity reasons while maintaining access to the web for research purposes. Google representatives confirmed that because of this technical integration, schools cannot selectively disable AI while keeping the search engine operational. The move follows consultations with educators and policymakers, though it effectively removes the option to use the search engine without AI augmentation.
