Google to Tighten Memory Usage Requirements for Android Apps
Google is introducing new quality standards for Android apps, focusing on memory usage and code optimization due to hardware supply chain challenges.

Google is set to implement stricter quality standards for Android applications, with a particular emphasis on memory consumption and code optimization. These changes are a response to significant hardware supply limitations affecting the mobile device industry, which ultimately impact the memory resources available on devices and user experience.
The new requirements will establish new performance thresholds for metrics such as dynamic memory usage and bitmap utilization. Additionally, enhanced code optimization will be mandated to reduce application slowdowns and crashes caused by performance issues.
To aid developers, Google will provide new diagnostic tools that will alert them when applications exceed defined thresholds, enabling timely code optimization. A "memory limiter" feature will also be introduced later this year to prevent apps from consuming excessive device memory and offer more in-depth analysis.
These updates are intended to ensure Android apps and games maintain good performance even as memory resources become more constrained, which is especially important for price-sensitive devices with lower hardware specifications. Developers must bring their applications into compliance by February 2027.
Furthermore, Google requires all Google Play Store apps to support "zero-click sign-in" by April 2027. This feature will automatically restore existing login states during device transfers via Android's migration capabilities, eliminating the need for users to re-enter credentials.
