Google updates Gemini to support direct document editing within chat

Google has expanded its Gemini AI capabilities, allowing users to generate, preview, and edit various file formats directly within the chatbot interface.

30 October 2026

Google announced today that users can now edit PDF, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Markdown, and code files directly inside the Gemini interface. This update removes the need to switch between the AI chat and external productivity applications for basic file modifications.

The update includes full-screen editing capabilities and allows users to highlight specific content within a document to prompt Gemini for adjustments. For example, users can select data in a spreadsheet and command the AI to convert it into a chart. While PDF support is available on both web and mobile, other file formats remain exclusive to the desktop web version at launch.

This move aligns Gemini with competitors such as Anthropic’s Claude, which introduced similar in-chat document editing earlier this year. Previously, Google users relied on the Gemini sidebar integration within Workspace apps to manage such tasks, but this update streamlines the workflow into a single chat-based experience.
