Google Vids introduces personal AI avatars and expanded editing tools

Google has enhanced its Google Vids service by introducing the ability for users to create videos featuring personalized AI avatars. The update allows individuals to generate a digital likeness of themselves using a selfie and a voice recording.

The platform also integrates Google's Gemini Omni AI model, enabling users to produce videos from prompts and uploaded reference images. This AI can further assist in editing by modifying elements like backgrounds or lighting, and adding visual effects.

Furthermore, Gemini Omni now supports step-by-step editing, allowing for incremental changes without needing to restart the entire video creation process. This evolution repositions Google Vids from its initial function as an AI-assisted workplace presentation tool to a more comprehensive video creation platform.

The new features, particularly personalized avatars and conversational editing capabilities, place Google Vids in direct competition with other AI video solutions like HeyGen and Synthesia. Google has stated that the avatars will be linked to user accounts, and videos will carry an invisible watermark generated by SynthID.
