Google's 2025 Electricity Use Rose 37% Amid AI Expansion

Google reported a 37 percent increase in its electricity consumption for 2025, marking the largest annual rise in the company's history. This surge is largely attributed to the ongoing buildout of data centers to support its artificial intelligence products and services.

The tech giant's total electricity usage has climbed over 250 percent since 2019. Google attributes this sustained growth to increased demand from Google Cloud, YouTube video streaming, and the construction and operation of AI-focused data centers.

This latest 37 percent annual increase follows a 27 percent rise in 2024, indicating a accelerating trend in the company's energy requirements.

According to Google's sustainability report, the company is focusing on scaling up clean power procurement globally and advancing technologies to reduce emissions, even as the pace of AI infrastructure development outstrips grid decarbonization efforts.
