Google's AI search rapidly becoming the default, new data shows

Google's AI-generated search responses, known as AI Overviews, are quickly becoming the default method for users seeking information online. According to a new report by market intelligence firm Similarweb, these AI-generated summaries were present in 43% of searches in May 2026, a significant rise from just 15% a year prior.

This data reflects a broader change in user behavior, transitioning from an era of clicking through lists of blue links to one where Google itself acts as an information aggregator. By synthesizing information from indexed websites, Google is becoming the destination, leading to increased user time spent on its platform rather than navigating to external sites.

The trend is further evidenced by a rise in usage of Google's AI Mode, which saw visits increase from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026. The average search query length has also increased, suggesting users are adopting more conversational queries suited for AI interpretation.

This shift has raised concerns among publishers who report a decline in referral traffic. When AI Overviews provide answers without direct links to source content, website owners may experience reduced visibility and a loss of potential ad revenue, impacting their traditional business models.
