Google's Gemini AI assistant nears one billion users
Google's AI assistant Gemini has surpassed 950 million monthly users, tripling its user base year-over-year. This growth intensifies competition with OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Google is approaching another milestone with its AI assistant Gemini, which has now reached over 950 million monthly users.
The company announced the figure during its Q2 2026 earnings call, marking a threefold increase in users compared to the previous year. In February 2026, the Gemini app had reported 750 million monthly active users.
This rapid user growth positions Gemini as a significant competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT, which reportedly crossed one billion monthly active users in June 2026. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted user engagement with new features like "Daily Brief" and the personalized agent "Gemini Spark."
Gemini has also seen substantial adoption on iOS, with over 137 million downloads in the past 12 months, according to AppFigures. A recent report by Sensor Tower indicated that ChatGPT's market share among AI assistants fell below 50% in the first half of 2026, while Gemini’s share rose to 27.7%.
Separately, Google reported that its AI-centric overhaul of Search has boosted engagement, with its AI Q&A mode surpassing one billion users during the quarter. The company also noted cost reductions in AI operations through hardware engineering.
