Google’s Gemini-powered smart speaker sees first major price reduction

Google’s latest smart speaker, launched in June, is currently retailing for $79 at major outlets including Best Buy, Walmart, and Target. This move marks the first significant price reduction for the hardware, which serves as the company's first entry into the smart speaker category in several years.

The device is positioned as a compact alternative to the legacy Nest Audio. It features 360-degree audio output and includes integration with Google’s Gemini AI, designed to improve natural language processing and command execution. While it outperforms many entry-level smart speakers in clarity, reviews indicate that the hardware does not match the audio range of larger, older models.

Technically, the unit supports the Matter smart home standard and includes a Thread border router. It also integrates with the Google TV Streamer 4K, allowing users to pair the hardware as an external audio source. Google has restricted some advanced Gemini capabilities, such as the Gemini Live conversational feature, to its $10-per-month Google Home Premium subscription service.
