Gotion High-Tech Secures 75% of Saudi Arabia's First Utility-Scale BESS Tender
Chinese battery maker Gotion High-Tech has secured 75% of Saudi Arabia's first utility-scale battery storage tender, covering 6 GWh capacity with a 25-year system lifespan.
Gotion High-Tech Awarded Majority Stake in Saudi Arabia's Inaugural Battery Storage Project
Saudi Arabia's first utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) tender has been largely awarded to Chinese manufacturer Gotion High-Tech. The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) granted Gotion 6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of capacity across three sites—Al Muwayah, Haden, and Al Kahafa. This significant contract, valued at approximately $1.16 billion, is a key development in the Kingdom's pursuit of its 2030 energy transition objectives.
The contract marks the first major international deployment of Gotion's Gotion Grid utility-scale storage system. The technology is engineered for extreme environmental conditions, including desert temperatures ranging from -30°C to 55°C, and features a desert-optimized thermal management system. Gotion highlights a 25-year design life for the system, exceeding the typical industry average of 15–20 years, which addresses a critical requirement for Build-Own-Operate (BOO) contracts demanding long-term operational stability.
This award positions Gotion as a major player in the Middle East and North Africa region, adding to its existing projects in Egypt and Morocco. Globally, the company's cumulative system-level storage projects now exceed 10 GWh, including a large solar-storage project under construction in Australia. The Saudi deal signals a rapid advancement in the Kingdom's energy storage procurement.
Industry observers note that Saudi Arabia's energy storage market is developing faster than anticipated. The technical specifications and the long-term operational requirements of the Saudi tender suggest that future procurement processes will likely place a greater emphasis on lifecycle economics and performance in harsh environments. Gotion's immediate challenge will be to leverage this initial success into sustained market share within the region.
