An artificial intelligence and large language model enthusiast has successfully had OpenAI's new GPT-6 Astra model independently complete Valve Corporation's 3D puzzle game "Portal." This achievement marks a significant advancement for language models in navigating complex, visual environments.

The playthrough involved 3,336 tool calls, incurring API costs of $571.18. The experiment's initiator, known as CozyBlaze, later clarified that these costs were covered by his $200 monthly Codex Pro subscription.

According to CozyBlaze, the model controlled "Portal" using a Model Context Protocol (MCP) and a modified SourcePauseTool. The game remained paused while the model "thought," and the SourcePauseTool would unpause and execute inputs once the model had planned its actions. The model received game state information, such as screenshots and character location, to plan its next moves.

CozyBlaze described the outcome as a realization of an "original vision" from OpenAI in 2016 to create a single AI agent capable of handling diverse gaming tasks. While acknowledging that challenges remain and the experiment should not be seen as a standardized benchmark, he noted that a general agent independently exploring and completing a game represents significant progress.

GPT-6 Astra, launched earlier this month, is OpenAI's latest flagship model. The company describes it as "next-generation intelligence" with state-of-the-art capabilities in computer operation, web browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity, scientific research, and professional tasks.
