GPUs: Environmental Costs and Ethical Questions Behind AI Boom

Currently, hundreds of thousands of GPUs are being installed in data centers globally to power the AI revolution. These chips are also integral to devices ranging from smartphones and cars to gaming PCs. Nvidia, a company that has transitioned from a niche chipmaker to become the world's most valuable, has been a long-time innovator in GPU technology, though the concept's origins can be traced back to the 1970s.

The rise of AI and its environmental consequences are particularly pertinent in the United States, which hosts the largest number of data centers. The construction of new data centers is prompting concerns within local communities regarding increased electricity bills and pollution. For instance, the NAACP has filed a lawsuit against xAI over air pollution stemming from gas generators installed to power its data centers.
