Great Wall Motor Opens Research Center in Austria

Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor (GWM) inaugurated a research and development company in Austria on January 12, 2018. The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary and serves as a significant R&D hub.

The new Austrian center will concentrate on the development of new energy vehicles, with an initial focus on research into electric motors and their controllers. This facility is part of GWM's global R&D network, complementing existing centers in Japan, the United States, and India, thereby strengthening the company's international research capabilities.

The strategic choice of Austria is driven by the country's advanced automotive industry, known for its expertise in new technologies, materials, and components, often referred to as the "Silicon Valley of the automotive industry" in Central Europe. GWM aims to leverage local resources, including skilled labor and supplier networks, to accelerate its development, particularly in the new energy sector.

GWM has committed to investing €20 million in the Austrian R&D center by 2020, with the goal of becoming a notable player in "smart manufacturing" within Europe and globally. The company continues to expand its worldwide R&D footprint and designs products to meet international market demands.
