Green prescription enables reimbursement for over-the-counter drugs

Berlin – Approximately two-thirds of Germany's statutory health insurance providers reimburse, at least partially, the costs of over-the-counter (OTC) medications, provided specific conditions are met. A key condition is often a doctor's prescription, documented by a 'green prescription'. In 2017, around 47 million OTC drugs were dispensed based on these prescriptions.

The German Pharmacists Association (DAV) advises insured individuals to retain all their green prescriptions and corresponding receipts. These documents are necessary when applying for reimbursement from health insurers for OTC drugs. Reimbursement policies vary significantly between insurance providers, as these are typically voluntary benefits rather than mandatory ones.

"The green prescription is very useful for consumers," stated pharmacist Stefan Fink, who is responsible for self-medication at DAV. "It serves as a doctor's recommendation and a memory aid for the patient, and can trigger reimbursement from the health insurer."

Commonly reimbursed items include herbal, homeopathic, and anthroposophical preparations. For pregnant individuals, medications containing iron, magnesium, and folic acid may also be covered. However, Fink emphasizes that each insured person should inquire directly with their health insurer about the specific conditions and covered items beforehand. Often, there is an annual spending cap, or the insured individual is expected to pay a co-payment.
