Green Storytelling in Film: Creativity Killer or Necessity?
Screenwriter Julia Dordel emphasizes the importance of green storytelling in films, suggesting it can influence audience behavior and raise awareness of the climate crisis.

Screenwriter and producer Julia Dordel has founded the Green Storytelling Initiative, aiming to integrate sustainability themes directly into film narratives. Dordel argues that films must reflect the reality of the climate crisis and biodiversity loss.
"We cannot pretend in the films we see or make that the climate crisis does not exist," Dordel stated. She believes that telling more sustainable stories can encourage the public to act more sustainably. This approach complements "Green Producing," which focuses on the ecological conditions of film sets.
Dordel suggests that green storytelling can lead to creative solutions, such as changing traditional car conversation scenes to outdoor settings. However, she acknowledges that the concept is not yet widely adopted in practice.
At the Emden Film Festival, many filmmakers were unfamiliar with the concept of green storytelling or its "Green Storytelling Checklist" tool. Concerns were also raised that this approach might stifle creativity, with festival director Edzard Wagenaar warning that predetermined environmental constraints could limit artistic expression.
