Grindr acquires Freddie for $250M to expand LGBTQ healthcare services

Dating app Grindr is significantly expanding its footprint in LGBTQ-focused healthcare with its first major acquisition. The company is paying $250 million for health startup Freddie, with the goal of fully integrating Freddie's HIV-prevention telehealth and pharmacy services into a broader Grindr Health offering.

The launch of Grindr Health builds on the company's existing telehealth business, Woodwork, which was launched in 2025 to connect users with medication for weight loss and erectile dysfunction. Users can now access features from both Freddie and Woodwork through a unified Grindr Health portal within the app.

Grindr CEO George Arison has long advocated for the app's role in making HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) more mainstream. PrEP is known to be 99% effective in reducing sexual transmission of HIV. Despite an increase in PrEP users in the U.S., a significant portion of the eligible population still could benefit from the medication, presenting a substantial growth opportunity for Grindr.

The acquisition of Freddie, which provides telehealth and pharmacy services with a focus on HIV prevention, is a strategic move for Grindr to establish itself as a comprehensive platform for LGBTQ+ health. This initiative aims not only to improve public health outcomes but also to strengthen the company's business model by offering valuable and in-demand health services to its user base.
