Grindr buys telehealth company PurposeMed for $250 million
LGBTQ+-focused dating app Grindr is expanding into healthcare by acquiring PurposeMed, the parent company of HIV prevention telehealth provider Freddie.
Grindr announced on Wednesday that it is expanding its healthcare services by acquiring PurposeMed, the parent company of HIV prevention telehealth provider Freddie, for $250 million. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter.
The acquisition includes $190 million in cash and $60 million in Grindr common stock, with potential for up to $70 million in additional performance-based consideration. This marks Grindr's first major acquisition since its founding in 2009.
Grindr CEO George Arison stated that the company believes this new venture could become as profitable and large as its core dating business. The acquisition aims to accelerate the development of Grindr's own LGBTQ healthcare platform, Woodwork, launched in 2025, by integrating Freddie's established services.
Freddie, founded in 2020 and operating in the U.S. since 2024, offers telehealth, testing, prescriptions, and medication delivery. Grindr estimates that over 400,000 U.S. users on its platform currently indicate they take PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), a medication that can reduce HIV risk by 99% when taken as prescribed. The acquisition allows Grindr to integrate these health services directly into its app.
