Gritt raises $34 million for robots to build solar plants
Robotics firm Gritt has secured $34 million in funding to automate demanding tasks on solar power plant construction sites.

Gritt, a robotics startup focused on automating construction tasks, has exited stealth mode after raising $26 million in Series A funding. The round was led by Obvious Ventures and included participation from Union Square Ventures and Active Impact Investments. The company aims to address labor shortages in the solar energy sector by developing robots capable of performing complex operations in unstructured outdoor environments.
Founded by Carnegie Mellon robotics graduates Puneet Puri (CEO) and Vishal Dugar (CTO), Gritt leverages advancements in AI to enable robots to operate effectively and safely on dynamic construction sites. This technology is intended to accelerate the deployment of solar energy infrastructure, a critical component of global efforts to transition to renewable energy sources and achieve energy independence.
The solar energy build-out is a significant global trend driven by the need for climate change mitigation and energy security. However, the rapid expansion of solar projects has been hampered by a scarcity of skilled labor. Gritt's approach seeks to bridge this gap, improving efficiency and potentially reducing project timelines through robotic automation.
While Gritt's initial focus is on solar plant construction, the company has broader ambitions to apply its automation technology to other areas within the broader construction industry. The newly acquired capital will fuel product development and support the company's expansion efforts. The construction sector is increasingly exploring automation, and Gritt's specialized focus positions it as a notable player in this evolving landscape.
