Grocery Outlet Closes 40 Stores in First Half of 2026

Grocery Outlet Holding Corp. has closed 40 stores during the first half of its fiscal year 2026, according to the company's recent earnings report. This figure includes 36 underperforming locations that the discount grocer had previously announced plans to shutter as part of a broader restructuring aimed at improving long-term profitability.

The company also opened 17 new stores during the same period, indicating a continued expansion alongside the closures. Grocery Outlet's stock (Nasdaq: GO) has seen a positive trend, rising approximately 11% over the last six months and about 10% year-to-date.

Global asset advisory firm Gordon Brothers is handling the marketing and subleasing of the closed store spaces. A July 2026 flyer from Gordon Brothers lists 30 former Grocery Outlet retail locations as still available for sublease, spread across California, Idaho, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

These store closures by discount grocers could exacerbate the issue of food deserts, areas with limited access to affordable and nutritious food. Other discount chains, such as Save A Lot, have also closed numerous stores in 2026, potentially impacting low-income communities that rely on these retailers for essential groceries.
