Grocery Stores' Efficiency Reduces Food Waste, Impacting Food Banks
Advancements in technology, particularly AI, are helping grocery stores significantly reduce food waste by improving demand forecasting. However, this increased efficiency is leading to fewer food donations for food banks.

Grocery stores are becoming more effective at cutting food waste through the adoption of new technologies. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are enabling more accurate demand forecasting for products, leading to waste reductions of over a third. Additionally, technology helps stores sell food before it expires.
Systems like Afresh, a demand forecasting tool now in over 12,000 grocery departments, help stores order less food, thus reducing spoilage. AI ordering tool Guac reports its clients have cut food waste by up to 38%. Another company, Crisp, uses AI to estimate shelf life, allowing retailers to adjust prices dynamically to sell perishable items before they go bad.
Despite these gains in efficiency, food banks are facing challenges. Reports from food banks indicate a decrease in donations, as stores have less surplus food. For instance, Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana is allocating a larger portion of its budget to purchasing food, whereas previously, most funds supported infrastructure and donated items.
Other factors are also affecting food banks, including reductions in government food aid. While reducing food waste is environmentally crucial, the increased efficiency in the food supply chain raises concerns about the availability of food for those in need. Food banks are increasingly compelled to purchase food themselves to meet demand.
