Grödner Joch to restrict transit traffic from September

The Grödner Joch mountain pass in South Tyrol is set to introduce a ban on transit traffic starting September 1, 2026. The initial phase will be a two-month pilot program, during which all motorized vehicles, excluding local residents, accommodation guests, and suppliers, will be prohibited from passing through.

The closure affects the Strada Statale 243 road, which connects the Val Gardena and Val Badia valleys and forms part of the popular Sella Ronda circuit. This measure aims to address the significant traffic congestion, which can reach up to 11,000 vehicles on peak summer days.

Should the pilot concept prove successful and gain approval from the provincial government, it is intended to lead to a seasonal closure implemented annually from May to October starting in 2027. This initiative is part of broader efforts in South Tyrol to manage overtourism.

Several other popular South Tyrolean destinations have already introduced access restrictions to regulate visitor numbers. For instance, limits are planned for visitor numbers and timed entry for the Seceda cable car. The Pragser Wildsee (Lago di Braies) has also tightened its access rules, requiring online reservations or the use of public transport for entry during specific hours.
