GSK acquires Elsie Biotechnologies to boost oligonucleotide drug platform

GSK plc announced on June 6, 2024, that it has acquired Elsie Biotechnologies, a private biotechnology company based in San Diego. The transaction is valued at up to $50 million (approximately £39 million).

Elsie Biotechnologies focuses on leveraging oligonucleotide technology for drug development. GSK will integrate the acquired technology to enhance its own research and development capabilities, particularly in discovery, synthesis, and delivery technologies. GSK had previously collaborated with Elsie since July 2023, validating its technology.

Oligonucleotides have a unique ability to modulate gene expression, making them an attractive modality to address a significant proportion of therapeutic targets not amenable to traditional small molecules or biologics. With this acquisition, GSK aims to expand its pipeline of oligonucleotide-based therapies.

Tony Wood, Chief Scientific Officer at GSK, stated that the collaboration with Elsie will accelerate the development of a next-generation oligonucleotide platform. He emphasized that by combining Elsie's expertise with GSK's internal capabilities, they can design and develop oligonucleotides for hard-to-treat diseases affecting larger patient populations. GSK is currently developing oligonucleotide therapeutics for conditions including chronic hepatitis B and steatotic liver disease, among others.

The acquisition has been completed and is not subject to any further closing conditions. GSK's strategy involves uniting science and technology to accelerate drug development.
