GSK and Alector to Develop Immuno-Neurology Drugs for Neurodegenerative Diseases

London, UK – GSK plc and Alector announced on July 2, 2021, a strategic global collaboration focused on the development and commercialization of two clinical-stage monoclonal antibodies, AL001 and AL101. These antibodies are designed to elevate progranulin (PGRN) levels, a key regulator of immune activity in the brain with genetic links to several neurodegenerative disorders.

The partnership combines Alector's immuno-neurology expertise with GSK's focus on the science of the immune system and human genetics, along with its global reach. AL001 is currently undergoing a pivotal Phase 3 trial for individuals at risk for or with frontotemporal dementia due to a progranulin gene mutation (FTD-GRN), a severe form of dementia with no approved treatments. AL001 is also in a Phase 2 study for patients with a C9orf72 gene mutation and is planned for Phase 2 development in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in the second half of 2021. AL101 is in a Phase 1a clinical trial, aimed at treating more prevalent neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.

Under the terms of the agreement, Alector will receive an upfront payment of $700 million and is eligible for up to an additional $1.5 billion in milestone payments. The companies will jointly commercialize the therapies in the U.S., sharing profits and losses. Outside the U.S., GSK will lead commercialization efforts, and Alector will receive tiered royalties.
