GSK initiates phase III trials for preterm labour drug retosiban

GSK plc has initiated a comprehensive phase III clinical trial programme to evaluate its new drug candidate, retosiban. The objective is to determine if the drug can be used to treat preterm labour and thereby improve the health outcomes for prematurely born neonates.

Retosiban is an oxytocin antagonist designed to inhibit uterine contractions and prolong gestation. Preterm birth, defined as birth at least three weeks before the due date, is a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. The drug is being studied specifically in women experiencing spontaneous preterm labour.

The first phase III study will compare retosiban against atosiban, a currently used medication. The primary endpoint measures the time to delivery after treatment initiation. Secondary endpoints will assess neonatal health complications and mortality rates.

GSK states that prematurity poses significant health risks to newborns, and currently, there are no successful treatments that improve neonatal outcomes. The company believes retosiban could offer a new therapeutic option for this critical health issue.
