GSK RSV vaccine data suggests lower risks of hospitalisation and related complications
Real-world study data presented by GSK indicates that its RSV vaccine reduces hospitalisation and severe exacerbations of chronic conditions in adults aged 60 and over.

GSK plc presented new effectiveness data for its RSV vaccine, Arexvy, at the ReSViNET conference in Rome. A retrospective cohort study in the US, covering over 2.5 million individuals, observed a 75.6% effectiveness rate against RSV-related hospitalisation among adults aged 60 and older.
Beyond respiratory outcomes, the data showed an association between vaccination and a 63.1% reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events—such as heart attack and stroke—during hospitalisation for RSV. The study also reported lower rates of severe exacerbations for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma within the vaccinated group during RSV-related hospital stays.
A separate nationwide study conducted in Denmark among patients aged 60 and older with COPD found that the vaccine was associated with 100% effectiveness in preventing RSV-related hospitalisations. GSK noted that while observational studies do not prove causality, these findings contribute to a growing body of evidence regarding the broader health impact of RSV prevention.
These results provide additional context for the role of RSV vaccination in managing patient outcomes for those with underlying cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. The vaccine remains indicated for the prevention of RSV-lower respiratory tract disease.
