GSK to Acquire Aiolos Bio to Expand Respiratory Disease Pipeline

GSK plc has agreed to acquire Aiolos Bio, a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing treatments for respiratory conditions, for an initial payment of $1 billion and up to an additional $400 million in success-based milestone payments.

The acquisition will provide GSK with Aiolos' AIO-001, a long-acting antibody targeting the TSLP pathway. The drug candidate is poised to enter Phase II clinical development for the treatment of asthma in adults and could potentially offer a new standard of care with dosing every six months.

Tony Wood, GSK's Chief Scientific Officer, stated that AIO-001 could expand the company's respiratory biologics portfolio. This may include patients with severe asthma who have low T2 inflammation, where current treatment options are limited. Targeting the TSLP pathway is a key driver of inflammation in allergic and inflammatory diseases.

GSK has a significant history in developing medicines for respiratory diseases. With AIO-001, the company could offer biologic treatments to a broader patient population, including those with low T2 inflammation. The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals.
