GTA 6's 60 FPS Target Challenging for Consoles, Says Former Rockstar Director
Former Rockstar Games technical director John Riccitiello believes Grand Theft Auto 6 may struggle to maintain a stable 60 frames per second on current consoles. Players should temper expectations for a 60 FPS launch.

John Riccitiello, a former technical director at Rockstar Games who worked on titles like Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption, has stated that Grand Theft Auto 6 might find it difficult to achieve a stable 60 frames per second (FPS) on current-generation consoles. He advises players not to expect native 60 FPS support at launch.
Riccitiello cited the game's immense scale and ambitious development goals as factors making a high frame rate difficult to sustain on platforms like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. He suggested that while 60 FPS modes have been rumored, Rockstar might have to compromise on visual fidelity or object density to achieve it. The studio will likely need to make trade-offs between graphical detail, environmental density, and overall frame rate.
It is more probable that Rockstar will prioritize maintaining graphical presentation and object density, according to Riccitiello. Previous leaks and retailer listings have hinted at the possibility of GTA 6 offering both 30 FPS and 60 FPS modes on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, though Rockstar has not officially confirmed this.
Historically, Rockstar Games has often capped frame rates at 30 FPS for console versions of its major titles, later adding 60 FPS support years after release. The report suggests that a more powerful console, such as the PlayStation 5 Pro, might be the first to achieve a stable 60 FPS at 4K. However, given the extensive development resources and long production cycle for GTA 6, it remains possible that the standard PS5 and Xbox Series X could eventually receive 60 FPS support.
