A third-party developer has successfully ported the classic game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas to the Meta Quest 3 virtual reality platform. This comes several years after Meta quietly canceled its official VR project for the same game. Developer GeT_RiCh announced the project's source code release on GitHub, enabling the game to be played on the Quest 3 headset.

The project is not a ready-made game package and requires technical expertise from users. Players must obtain a legitimate Android version of the game and compile the OpenXR layer on a computer. The resulting program is then installed on a Quest 3 headset set to developer mode. Additionally, a specific Android version and game audio packs are necessary.

GeT_RiCh utilized AI tools to assist in writing parts of the code but emphasized that the majority of the adaptation and implementation was his own work. The project is still in its early stages and does not offer a complete VR experience, but it demonstrates the community's ability to revive abandoned official projects.

Meta's reasons for canceling the original project remain officially undisclosed. Potential factors could include the Quest 2's performance limitations, the game's complexity in a VR environment, or doubts about its commercial viability. This initiative reflects a growing trend of community developers porting VR versions of traditional games that lack official VR releases.
