Guerbet is addressing the recurrent challenge of non-target embolization in interventional radiology with the introduction of a novel microcatheter.

Non-target embolization, a potentially fatal complication, is a common concern for interventional radiologists. Irene Bargellini, an interventional radiologist from Pisa, Italy, highlighted the issue at the Embolotherapy conference (ET). She emphasized that successful risk mitigation involves a thorough understanding of vascular anatomy, precise catheter positioning, careful selection of embolic agents, and close fluoroscopic monitoring during injection.

The newly developed microcatheter, which received CE marking in April, aims to specifically reduce the risk of embolic material reflux. The device features side-holes designed to allow fluid egress while preventing embolic material backflow, creating a vortex that acts as a barrier.

It is important to note that outcomes may vary among individual practitioners due to differences in hospital equipment, patient conditions, and procedural specifics. Availability of Guerbet products may differ by country.
