French pharmaceutical company Guerbet has released detailed information regarding its DOTAREM® (gadoteric acid) 0.5 mmol/mL solution for injection. This contrast agent is intended for diagnostic use in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) examinations.
DOTAREM is used for the investigation of diseases of the brain, spinal cord, and vertebral column, as well as other pathologies affecting the whole body, including angiography. Guerbet emphasizes that the product should only be used when essential diagnostic information cannot be obtained with unenhanced MRI.
The recommended dose for adults and children is 0.1 mmol/kg, equivalent to 0.2 mL/kg. The company advises using the lowest dose that provides sufficient enhancement for diagnostic purposes. Specific guidance is also provided for dosing and repeat administration in patients with impaired renal function or within the pediatric population.
Furthermore, Guerbet outlines contraindications and provides warnings and precautions for use. These include hypersensitivity to gadoteric acid or other gadolinium-containing products, and considerations for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The product must not be administered intrathecally. The active substance is gadoteric acid, a compound of gadolinium and DOTA-tetracarboxylic acid, with information on potential adverse effects also listed.
