Guidelines for Integrating Limit Switches with Linear Actuators
ONPOW Push Button Manufacture Co., Ltd. has released technical guidance on the strategic placement and functional requirements for limit switches in linear actuator applications.

The integration of limit switches into linear motion systems requires a precise assessment of both the actuator's internal capabilities and the external environmental constraints. ONPOW advises engineers to determine the specific role of an external switch—whether for process feedback or safety—before proceeding with hardware selection. Critically, an external limit switch should not be treated as a replacement for integrated motor protection mechanisms.
System designers must account for latency between the trigger point and the physical cessation of movement. This includes signal processing time, controller response, and the mechanical inertia of the load. Failure to factor in these variables can lead to over-travel, where the mechanism exceeds its intended operating range, potentially causing hardware failure.
From an electrical perspective, ONPOW cautions against connecting external limit switches directly to the actuator's motor power circuit without proper buffering. Inductive loads and inrush currents can compromise contact integrity. Engineers are urged to maintain electrical isolation by routing feedback signals through controllers and utilizing manufacturer-approved circuitry to ensure long-term system reliability.
