Gujarat Police flagged 190,000 URLs via Sahyog Portal, RTI reveals
Data obtained through a Right to Information request shows Gujarat Police issued 5,358 takedown notices via the federal Sahyog portal, averaging one URL flagged every six minutes.
Gujarat Police have issued 5,358 takedown notices covering 190,633 URLs through the Ministry of Home Affairs' Sahyog Portal, according to a Right to Information (RTI) response received in October 2026. This equates to an average of one URL flagged every six minutes since the portal's launch in late 2024.
While the Sahyog Portal was designed to automate takedown requests under India's Information Technology Act, the government does not maintain a central repository of these actions. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has stated that individual state police departments are responsible for tracking their own records, making the Gujarat disclosure a significant insight into the scale of automated state censorship.
The activity level in Gujarat highlights a stark contrast to federal-level figures reported earlier. Previously, the Indian Express cited data suggesting that I4C-issued notices were occurring at a significantly lower frequency, pointing to a decentralized and highly active implementation of the portal at the state level.
The legality and transparency of the Sahyog Portal have faced scrutiny, with platform X challenging the system in court on the grounds that it bypasses established blocking protocols. The Supreme Court of India has currently stayed lower court rulings on the matter as litigation continues.
