Hacker Disrupts French Supermarket Refrigeration Systems
A hacker altered the temperature settings in hundreds of French supermarkets' refrigeration units, causing food spoilage and fires. The attack specifically impacted around 150 Intermarché stores.
October 10, 2026 – A cyberattack has disrupted the refrigeration systems of hundreds of supermarkets across France, leading to significant food spoilage and at least one fire. The incident, which primarily affected around 150 stores belonging to the Intermarché chain, saw hackers raise temperatures in refrigerators and freezers to 50°C for six hours.
Retailer Les Mousquetaires, the parent company of Intermarché, confirmed that all affected food products had to be discarded to eliminate food safety risks. Reports indicate that other supermarket chains, including Carrefour and Monoprix, were also targeted in the coordinated attack.
Sources suggest the breach involved a refrigeration controller manufactured by Danfoss. The company stated that the affected units were running outdated firmware, and Danfoss has repeatedly advised its customers to update their systems.
This event highlights the vulnerability of critical supply chains, such as grocery refrigeration, to cyber threats and underscores the importance of maintaining up-to-date security measures.
