Hackers Demonstrate Functional Doom Ports on Neo Geo Hardware

Following claims that running Doom on the Neo Geo console was functionally impossible due to its sprite-based hardware and lack of a frame buffer, two separate hacker projects have made significant progress. These efforts demonstrate the surprising capabilities of dedicated coders working with legacy systems.

The projects, dubbed Doom64KB and NeoDoom, have both managed to get the game running on stock Neo Geo hardware. The Doom64KB project, developed by FrenkelS, utilizes the console's 'fix layer' to emulate a frame buffer, typically used for displaying UI elements.

While these ports involve substantial graphical compromises and would not have been viable as commercial '90s releases, they stand as a testament to what can be achieved with clever coding and determination. MVG has detailed these limitations in a new video.

The successful adaptations highlight the challenges and unexpected possibilities presented by the Neo Geo's unique architecture. These achievements push the boundaries of what is considered possible on vintage gaming hardware.
