Hainan Commercial Space Launch Center Completes Phase Two Construction, Boosts Launch Capacity
The main construction of Phase Two at Hainan International Commercial Spaceflight Launch Site is complete and has begun joint drills. The facility aims to achieve an annual launch capacity of over 60 missions.
Hainan International Commercial Spaceflight Launch Site has completed the main construction of its Phase Two project, initiating joint drills to prepare for enhanced operational capabilities. The site is set to achieve an annual launch capacity exceeding 60 missions upon final testing.
The second phase, which commenced construction in January 2025, covers over 1,100 mu (approximately 182 acres) and includes two general-purpose launch pads for medium-sized liquid-propellant rockets. These pads are designed to support rockets with diameters under 5 meters, such as the Long March 12B.
With the full completion of Phase Two, along with supporting telemetry, tracking, and command systems, and recovery infrastructure, the Hainan launch site will establish a closed-loop capability for launch, monitoring, and recovery. This is projected to facilitate over 60 launches per year.
Construction of the second phase leveraged lessons learned from the first phase to optimize design and critical path processes, aiming for shorter timelines and reduced costs. Improvements included streamlining excavation techniques and adjusting structural designs to mitigate construction complexities and enhance efficiency.
