Hainan Commercial Space Launch Site Phase II Complete, Targets Launch Capability This Year
The main construction of Phase II of the Hainan Commercial Space Launch Site has been completed and simulation exercises have begun. Two new launch pads are expected to achieve launch capability by the end of this year.
The main construction of Phase II of the Hainan Commercial Space Launch Site was completed on September 29, with simulation exercises commencing the same day. The project includes two general-purpose, medium-sized liquid propellant launch pads designed to support rockets with diameters under five meters and two-stage configurations, such as the Changzheng 12B.
Construction on the second phase began in January 2025 and spanned over 1,100 mu (approximately 180 acres). The main structures were completed in a rapid 612 days. Following subsequent simulations and testing, the two launch pads are slated to achieve full launch capability by the end of 2026.
Upon full integration of Phase II, tracking and control systems, and maritime recovery facilities, the Hainan Commercial Space Launch Site will possess a comprehensive launch capacity exceeding 60 missions annually. This development aims to create a closed-loop capability encompassing launch, tracking, control, and recovery.
Located in Wenchang International Space City within the Hainan Free Trade Port, this site is China's first commercial space launch facility. It is intended to support both commercial space missions and the development of low Earth orbit satellite internet constellations. The site successfully conducted its inaugural launch on November 30, 2024, marking a significant step for China's commercial space sector.
