Haiti Violence Drives Children into Profound Crisis
Escalating violence in Haiti has displaced nearly 20,000 people in the Port-au-Prince region, according to the UN. Humanitarian operations face critical funding gaps affecting child education and protection.
Haiti's escalating violence has displaced nearly 20,000 people in the Port-au-Prince region alone, according to the latest figures from the United Nations. Meanwhile, humanitarian operations are critically underfunded, with only 43% of the $674 million Humanitarian Response Plan met, leaving urgent needs unmet across the country.
Funding for critical services for children, including education and protection, remains alarmingly low. According to the UN's Haiti Humanitarian Response Plan 2024, only 33.1% of funding needs for the education sector and 30.9% for the protection cluster have been met. This leaves thousands of children without essential safety, support, and opportunities, jeopardizing their protection from exploitation and the long-term impacts of violence.
As Haiti grapples with escalating violence, political instability, and a deepening humanitarian crisis, Johnson Bien-Aime, Plan International's Country Director in Haiti, highlighted the urgent challenges facing children and families.
"Haiti's escalating violence is also a profound child protection crisis," Bien-Aime stated. "Every day, children are being robbed of their safety, their education, and the chance to simply be children. Families are trapped in fear, and the hunger crisis is worsening, leaving nearly half the population facing acute food insecurity."
Plan International teams are providing vital child protection services, including safe spaces, psychosocial support, and case management for the most vulnerable. The organization is collaborating with local partners to reach affected areas and expand efforts to provide food, education, and care. However, urgent action from the international community, including safe access and increased support, is needed to protect children and deliver life-saving aid.
