Researchers from Lund University, in collaboration with Hamlet BioPharma, have published a significant study in The Journal of Infectious Diseases. The paper outlines a novel treatment strategy for bacterial infections, particularly focusing on urinary tract infections (UTIs), which are prevalent worldwide.

The study centers on targeting the host's disease response rather than directly attacking the bacteria. This approach offers an alternative to conventional antibiotics, which are increasingly challenged by resistant bacterial strains. The research demonstrates that the bacterial protein NlpD or its peptide LytM can effectively mitigate infection symptoms and promote bacterial clearance from the body.

The drug candidate has shown efficacy in inhibiting the inflammatory response that often exacerbates infection symptoms and damages tissue. By counteracting the disease-causing mechanisms initiated by bacteria, the host's own defenses can more effectively combat the infection. This non-antibiotic treatment has also proven effective against antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains.

The study's findings are based on extensive animal model experiments where NlpD and LytM significantly reduced disease severity and accelerated bacterial clearance. Hamlet BioPharma previously received European regulatory approval for a Phase III study of its Alpha1H therapy for bladder cancer. This new publication, however, opens up new avenues in the treatment of infectious diseases.
